The Subaru Ascent Concept Makes its New York Debut

If they are looking at a Subaru for sale, Perth residents will find a car to suit most needs. In the SUV segment alone we have the venerable Forester, the Outback, and the XV crossover. Until recently in 2014 we also had the seven seater Tribeca, but its time has passed, and a new model is about to be added to the Subaru stable. Enter the Subaru Ascent, which made its debut at the recent prestigious New York Motor Show.

The Ascent vs. the Viziv Show Car

The Ascent concept was first displayed as the Subaru Viziv-7 show car last year. Aside from the name change to the Ascent, there have been a few changes worthy of mentioning. The Ascent is now 5,050mm long, 1,989mm wide, 1,839mm tall and it has a 2,972mm wheelbase. It is expected that the final release will stick to those dimensions, this means that the Subaru Ascent will actually be larger than its competitors, such as the: Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Kluger and Ford Explorer.

Current Pre Production Specifications

As it stands, the Ascent has seating for up to seven people using three rows of seats. The front row features comfortable and room captain’s chairs that adult drivers will love. There is a new turbocharged boxer powerplant with direct injection, but there are no concrete details on the capacity, performance or fuel economy figures yet. The Subaru Ascent concept is riding on a set of 21” alloy wheels that are shod with 275/50 tyres and of course being Subaru it will have a wheel drive as a standard feature. This vehicle will be produced using the new Subaru Global Platform, and it’s expected to go into full production in 2018.

Will We See the Subaru Ascent in Australia?

At the moment, production is scheduled to take place at the Subaru factory in Lafayette, Indiana. The Ascent is aimed squarely at the American SUV market, and there are no current plans to sell it anywhere else. However, Masahiko Inoue the Subaru project general manager let slip recently that a right hand drive version is not completely off the table. This would seem to indicate that the Ascent may be expanded into other markets later. However, for the foreseeable future, this means that Subaru seven seater fans will need to visit used car dealers. Perth drivers should be able to find quality used Subaru Tribeca models available there.
