Exploring rough terrain: is the Subaru Crosstrek good for off-roading?

MY24 Subaru Crosstrek good for off-roading Camping

The Subaru Crosstrek is undoubtedly easy on the eye. But how does it perform when you leave the tarmac behind? While many small SUVs combine the practicalities of a utility vehicle with average off-road capability, most fail to hit the spot when the going gets tough.

So, does the Crosstrek deliver? Let’s look at the evidence…

Is the Subaru Crosstrek Good for Off-Road? Looking at the Basics.

When defining how good a vehicle is off-road, we first need to understand a bit more about the challenges such driving presents.

There are two main features that a good off-roader needs to account for:

  1. Driving on uneven and slippery surfaces.
  2. Having enough ground clearance to drive over obstacles.

The Subie Crosstrek is what’s known as an All-Wheel-Drive (AWD). This means that the vehicle powers all of the wheels, rather than a standard two-wheel drive that only sends it to either the front or rear wheels. In practical terms, this means that when traction is compromised, an AWD can propel the vehicle from every wheel, providing the grip needed that allow it to continue moving forward.

Subaru uses a very clever, intuitive AWD system that automatically adjusts to the terrain – and it’s this advanced technology that makes it an exceptionally good SUV to take off-road.

But this certainly isn’t the only aspect when determining if the Subaru Crosstrek is good for off-road use. Ground clearance is one of the greatest challenges when it comes to taking an SUV off the beaten track.

We’re happy to report that the Subaru Crosstrek offers a rather impressive 220mm of ground clearance. This beats virtually every other SUV in a similar class and is one of the reasons the Crosstrek blows its competitors out of the water. This, in combination with its short overhangs, makes it a nifty little beast that’ll cope with an awful lot of terrain that other SUVs can’t.

Is the Subaru Crosstrek Good for Off-Road? Time to Get a Bit More Technical

The Crosstrek is powered by either a 2.0-litre petrol or hybrid e-BOXER engine. This provides more than enough grunt for those off-road moments when you need that extra edge. In addition, the engine is positioned low and flat in the engine bay. This improves stability and lowers the centre of gravity – something that plays a major role in the Crosstrek’s off-road capabilities.

The vehicle also boasts a reinforced, stiffened, all-steel version of the Subaru Global Platform (SGP). It’s this unique advanced chassis that underpins the vehicle’s ability to give a smooth ride both on and off-road.

Another intuitive addition to the AWD capabilities is the X-MODE with Hill Descent Control. For adventurous driving, this is the game-changing feature that makes the vehicle outshine every other in its class.

Remember that AWD system that cleverly provides traction to each wheel? Well, X-MODE takes this to the next level to this in times of need. For example, you’ve hit some soft sand, or a sudden downpour has transformed a dusty outback track into a slushy, muddy quagmire. When you engage X-MODE, the system automatically makes further adjustments to the vehicle’s controls to improve traction, stability and control.

This includes small but crucial modifications to:

  • The engine throttle: Ensuring the right amount of torque is delivered to the wheels, preventing spinning and loss of traction.
  • The transmission: Keeping the engine in the correct low gear to maximise power.
  • Enhanced limited slip differential: Preventing slipping or spinning by only applying the brakes to the wheels that need it.
  • Splitting power between the front and rear wheels: Thanks to the symmetrical AWD system.

But it doesn’t end there… Because Hill Descent Control also comes into play when, as the name suggests, you need to safely navigate a steep downhill slope. When engaged, the system will automatically brake and accelerate as needed, meaning all you need to concentrate on is the steering.

Is the Subaru Crosstrek Good for Off-Road? The Answer is a Resounding Yes!

Not only is the Subaru Crosstrek the best SUV in its class for off-road adventures, but it also represents outstanding value for money. For most of us, hitting the outback or beach bashing only represents a small proportion of the mileage we do in our vehicles. Finding an appropriate vehicle that ticks all the right multi-purpose boxes has long been a challenge. They either look the part but have poor off-road performance, or you bite the bullet and shell out a considerable amount for a 4×4 that not only costs a heap but sacrifices ride comfort and manoeuvrability.

This is where this little Subie is so different from virtually any other small SUV out there. Not only is the Subaru Crosstrek good for off-road, but it also:

  • Is great value for money.
  • Has a spacious interior.
  • Looks pretty awesome.
  • Is easy to drive.
  • Has plenty of room front and back.

And you’ll be able to drive it across way more challenging off-road conditions than most SUVs.
