The wait is nearly over as the Subaru BRZ 2016 will be available here in Australia soon. For those late to the party, this car’s arrival has been keenly anticipated by all serious petrolheads. In this article, we will take a look at what the only rear wheel drive car in the Subaru line up has to offer the sports car enthusiast.
The BRZ Overview
The BRZ is a compact rear wheel drive sports coupe with dynamic handling and exhilarating styling. The car is perfectly balanced and very sure footed when cornering, even at speed. The superior handling is partly down to the car’s low center of gravity. This is achieved by mounting the Boxer engine low in the car which helps with the front and rear weight distribution. It’s fair to say that Subaru is well known for their AWD vehicles, but the BRZ has a rear wheel drive design. The drive system has been worked on extensively by Subaru engineers to ensure that it handles as surefooted as any other Subaru does.
The Boxer Engine
The new Subaru BRZ features a 2.0 litre, four cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine. This engine has been designed in house by Subaru and it is used in the WRX and WRX STI models. This power plant can produce 147kW of power and 205 Nm of torque. The engine is high revving, and it has the roar that all Subaru fans love.
Control is Essential
Having all the power and handling that you need is fantastic, but it would be pointless without adequate controls. The Subaru BRZ is designed as an authentic sports car experience with the controls to match. The cockpit is designed to put every necessary drivers control in the optimum position. The cabin feels elemental, stripped back and ready for racing at a moments notice.
Subaru BRZ 2016 Features
Despite offering a primal sports coupe experience there is a surprising amount of equipment and features available, such as: a horizontally opposed Boxer engine, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), SRS Airbags, Brake Assist, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, Front and Rear fog lights, a rear diffuser, 17” alloy wheels and a Leather steering wheel with red stitching. There are also two security features, the DataDot DNA security system and the Immobiliser security system. Like all Subaru vehicles, the BRZ has a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. Subaru also offers a 12 months roadside assistance program for qualifying drivers and a capped price scheduled servicing plan over three years or 60,000km.
