New 2019 Subaru Forester Review
The 2019 Subaru Forester is now available; it’s an unpretentious and practical SUV designed to build on the success of the outgoing model. This is not surprising in many ways as Subaru has enjoyed considerable success with Forester here in Australia. This fifth generation Forester is an entirely new car, yet it still feels familiar, and this will appeal to the loyal owner base. This latest Forester arrived in September 2018, so let’s take a look at what it has to offer.
The New Forester Highlights
At a glance, some of the standout highlights include a brighter and more spacious cabin, even better occupant safety standards and fantastic off roading performance. The exterior aesthetics are quite similar to the outgoing model. Of course, opinions on design are subjective, and many hardcore Subaru petrolheads will appreciate the familiarity.
The Subaru Global Platform
The new generation Forester is built on the Subaru Global Platform along with its Subaru Impreza and XV stablemates. This platform is an adjustable core architecture that will provide the underpinning for many future Subaru releases. The new Forester is slightly larger, stronger and stiffer than the outgoing model and this will offer even more protection in a collision. This slightly larger size has also given us the roomiest Forester interior to date, and the 1.3m wide boot has a 520L capacity and room for a full sized spare under the boot floor.
The New Engines
The outgoing Forester was powered by a 2.5L engine that generates 126kW of power and 235 Nm of torque. This latest power plant generates 136kW of power and 239 Nm of torque. This engine also feels more upbeat, and Subaru is claiming a combined fuel consumption of 7L/100km (Japanese testing) which is frugal for an SUV. The engine is paired with a CVT that has a manual and automatic sport mode. At the end of 2019, we may also see the e-Boxer hybrid, which is a 2.0L petrol engine paired with an electric motor using lithium ion batteries. Early combined fuel consumption testing has delivered 5.4L/100km which will certainly increase Subaru sales here.
