The Subaru Forester XT Premium vs. The Volkswagen Tiguan 162 TSI Highline R-Line
There are mid sized crossovers available that will be adequate for most people, but what if you want a vehicle with some extra performance and luxury touches? The answer is probably a car at the more premium end of the scale. Let’s take a closer look at two cars in this category, the new Volkswagen Tiguan 162 TSI Highline R-Line and the tried and tested Subaru Forester XT Premium.
The Subaru Forester XT Premium:
Subaru Forester for sale in Australia today is well loved and respected by petrol heads. Under the bonnet, there is 2.0 litre turbocharge boxer powerplant that generates 177 kW of power and 350Nm of torque. The Forester has more power than the Tiguan, although to be fair the VW peaks earlier. The Forester is definitely a premium vehicle with a generous sunroof, great visibility, and extendable front sun blinds. The Forester has all wheel drive, and it rides smoothly over all kinds of rough surfaces in all kinds of low grip conditions.
The Volkswagen Tiguan 162 TSI Highline R-Line:
The engine is a 2.0 litre turbo four that is the same model used on the Golf GTI. This powerplant generates 162 kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Inside, the cabin is comfortable with soft materials, a good build quality, and a larger touchscreen than the Forester. The Tiguan also has smartphone mirroring which is lacking on the Forester. The ride is more than adequate on urban roads, but off road, performance is less convincing.
The Final Verdict:
The Subaru Forester 2.0 XT Premium comes in at $48,240 plus on roads vs. the Volkswagen Tiguan 162 TSI Highline R-Line at $48,490. It should be noted that the Tiguan would need $6,700 worth of extras to get a similar specification to the Forester and this brings the real price up to $55,190. So in real terms, the Tiguan costs $6,950 more than the Forester making it a more expensive proposition.
Both cars have extensive features, such as leather seats, LED headlights, seven airbags, lane assist, a rearview camera, satellite navigation, rain sensing wipers, touchscreen infotainment systems, autonomous emergency braking, ISOFIX points, an electric tailgate, 18” alloys and a five star ANCAP rating. However, despite being a cheaper car, the Forester also has a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a traffic jam start reminder.
