Get out & stay out. WA’s best locations for an unforgettable getaway.

subaru cars

And you’re off. With the city far behind and nothing but winding roads and big sky ahead, it’s time to take a closer look at Western Australia’s top getaway locations. Oh, and a couple of cars that will get you there. Your adventure in a Subaru starts right here.

Head north to Karijini before it’s too hot

When driving North, there are a few things to consider. The first is the length of your vacation. A few days off will not warrant the two-day drive to Karijini National Park, but if you’ve managed to get at least the week off, that’s already looking like the trip to aim for. Next: which route will you take? The drive inland is the quickest, and takes you past the gapingly large open-cut mine next to the town of Newman. For those who are keen to see how big the mining trucks are in the flesh, this is a great photo op. Saving the coast drive for the home run is also a nice idea. After your time in the desert, dropping in at Ningaloo and Coral Bay is almost a necessity. For these long road trips, the Subaru Forester boasts some of the best cargo space and fuel efficiency numbers. Its symmetrical AWD system is constantly making your drive easier on those dirt tracks, just a bit of extra grip can go a long way in keeping your car in balance. Inland to Kalgoorlie and the Salt Lakes

If you’re tired of the same two vacation options, North and South, then try out East. The historical mining town of Kalgoorlie has a lot to offer for a weekend away and is just over 6 hours drive from the big sticks. For a shorter trip like this, the Subaru XV is perfect. A compact crossover with excellent power and generous boot space, the Subaru XV is a safe car too, with top safety ratings and excellent Driver Assistance packages, everyone is safe behind the wheel.

With a rugged exterior, the Subaru XV fits right in with the mining town ambience. From Kalgoorlie drive to Menzies, and from there hit the 55km of unsealed road to Ballard Lake. Press your X-mode button to make use of the maximum grip and lower gear ratios when tackling softer roads. Arriving at the Lake Ballard campsite is truly memorable. One of the most authentic outback experiences up for grabs; sit back, take in the scene with a cold beer. Staying overnight is recommended and completely free. The early morning is a great time to explore the lake before heading back to town. Remember to bring your sunglasses, and stay hydrated along the way.

On the drive back a much needed fuel stop may be in order, and remember to check your oil and coolant levels too. When shifting back onto the sealed road, remember to disengage X-Mode. The XV is built for versatility, so make good use of it. To find out how this car balances adventure and practicality, read this Subaru XV review.

Pemberton and Margaret River wine regions

When heading South with a bottle of local vino as your motivation, you’ve got two major regions vying for your experienced palate. Either you’ll settle in at Margaret River and enjoy a top dining experience with local favourites and a juicy red, or wait out a few extra hours to be rewarded with rolling vineyards and misty vales of the Pemberton Wine Region. Top pick for this trip? The Subaru XV Crossover is perfect for the open road and especially navigating country town streets. With plenty of room for surfboards on the roof and a couple of rods, it’s been tried and tested on the southern run. With a light body and excellent ground clearance, the XV will deliver you swiftly and without fail to some of the most exclusive beaches on the Southwest coast.

Esperance and beyond?

If not now, when? Is the catchphrase that has inspired many a road trip this in 2020. With the perfect window of opportunity, far away locations now seem more accessible than ever. With the right car and plenty of good albums to sing along to, you’re ready for your trip to see the white sands of Esperance. Driving there can be done in a day, but is easily broken into two legs by a range of stunning stopover locations. As your feet sink into the squeaky white sand, gaze out into the Southern Ocean, and if you’re lucky you’ll see a whale on the horizon. However you’ve arrived, be it at the wheel of the rugged XV, or the sturdy Subaru Forester, both cars are now more equipped than ever to take you further than you expected. Test drive your preferred model today and see where your next adventure takes you.
