The new 2016 Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S has been available for a little while now. If they are looking for a non turbo Subaru Impreza for sale, Perth residents should seriously consider the Impreza 2.0i-S. This car is cheaper than the full on Subaru WRX, but it has much of the same fun factor. We took the car out and put it through its paces on a wide variety of surfaces and here is what we thought of it.
The Driving Experience
Like all Subaru cars, the Impreza 2.0i-S is an all wheel drive model with some of the sure footed rallying heritage still in its DNA. Cornering feels solid, even on wet surfaces and gravel the Impreza feels like it is on rails. One small issue we found was that the tyres could be a little loud on rough terrain. An easy fix was to increase the tyre pressure to 34psi and the sound disappeared. The 2.0L engine was great, but a larger 2.5L unit would have been very welcome. Throughout reviewing this car, it was hard to reconcile the fact that this model is a non WRX alternative without a turbo. As the Impreza was such fun to drive it was easy to become greedy and forget that this model is much cheaper.
The Engine
As previously mentioned, the powerplant is a 2.0L unit which generates 110kw of power at 6200 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. This is a four cylinder multi point fuel injected unit that lacks the brutal turbocharger that is present on more expensive models in the range. The power to weight ratio is 79.4W/kg, and acceleration is more than acceptable. The Subaru Impreza 2.0i-S always fell slightly short of the full on the mad fun that we have come to expect, but I had to repeat the mantra “This is not a WRX”!
The Extras
The Impreza is available as a four door sedan or a five door hatch with nice up to date body styling on both body types. It was really nice to have a sunroof in a car of this kind, and there were many other features to admire. These include cruise control, climate controlled air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity for your phone and audio streaming. There is also a touchscreen interface, voice command, steering wheel mounted audio controls, an automatic stop/start system to save fuel, hill start assist, aluminium alloy wheels, a total of seven airbags, electronic stability controls, the famous Subaru AWD system and a three year unlimited km warranty.
In summary, we can recommend the Impreza 2.0i-S as a solid lower cost fun alternative to the more expensive WRX.
