A Brief Review of the Upcoming 2016 Subaru Levorg GT

Excitement is rapidly building for the mid 2016 release of the long awaited Subaru Levorg wagon. The Levorg has been tremendously successful since its 2013 domestic release in Japan, and it will replace the outgoing fourth generation Liberty wagon in Australia. The highest specification versions are the GT and the GT-S respectively, and it is the former that is being briefly reviewed here.

What is the Levorg?

The Subaru Levorg is built on the wheelbase of the Impreza, much like the Liberty before it. It is slightly larger externally than the outgoing Liberty, and it has 50 litres more cargo space. Unlike the Liberty, the Levorg is a wagon and not an SUV model, in that respect, it is a vehicle designed for use on the road. At its heart, it is a practical family car with plenty of family friendly features. However, it is no slouch on the road, and it is a great deal of fun to drive.

The GT Experience

The Subaru Levorg for sale in Australia later this year has a variety of different specifications. The focus here is to look at the Levorg GT and what it offers the curious driver looking to upgrade from the Liberty GT or a new buyer. Essentially, although Subaru denies it, some industry experts are calling the Levorg GT a WRX wagon. The engine is the 2.0 litre DIT turbocharged boxer powerplant fitted to the WRX without the additional tuning for the track. The acceleration is firm, and the SI-Drive has a Sport Sharp setting that nicely mimics short stack eight speed gear changes. Braking is assisted with Active Torque Vectoring making cornering dynamic and keen. The steering is responsive, and the Levorg has stable, friendly handling characteristics that won’t punish the casual driver. Although the Levorg GT does not offer an authentic WRX experience it does comes very close considering that is isn’t an actual WRX.

Other Considerations

The engine choice is interesting, but it isn’t the only reason that the motoring industry is taking notice. The anticipated price point could be around $45,000 at the entry level rising to around $50,000 at the top end. The upper price point is where the Levorg GT will be located, but what will the specification be? The Japanese test cars may offer some clues here, and they were equipped with features such as LED headlights, a brand new infotainment system, 18” alloy wheels, a new sports seat design, and Eyesight active safety technology. The Eyesight system is evolving with every release, and the Levorg has the latest technology capable of a HUD style display, rear vehicle detection, side view monitoring, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alerts.
