The new Subaru XV is a larger version of the Impreza hatchback, offering a longer touring range and comfortable ride. Despite the modest Subaru XV price tag, the model features the EyeSight safety suite packed with driver aids. So, here we’ll explore the features and driving experience you can expect from this impressive five-door hatchback.
The Engine
Like its stablemate, the Impreza, the Subaru XV is only available with one engine option, a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre petrol unit. This is a very similar unit to the one used in the Impreza, but when paired with the CVT transmission, it uses 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres. Like the Impreza, the XV engine is mounted flat across the engine bay to increase steering responsiveness. There is also a stop-start function, which automatically stops and restarts the engine when you stop to save fuel during city driving.
The Features
All Subaru XV models have an impressive list of features. There is cruise control and air conditioning, an infotainment system with a colour touchscreen, MP3 compatibility, Android Auto, Apple Car Play, and Bluetooth connectivity. All of these functions can be operated using the steering wheel controls, so you can adjust your audio settings and answer calls without taking your eyes off the road.
The XV also has alloy wheels, adjustable steering wheel, roof rails, seven airbags, reverse camera, hill start assist, active torque vectoring, and electronic stability control. There is also the X-Mode system borrowed from the Forester to direct power to the wheels with more grip to climb any slippery slopes.
Higher Spec Variants
The base model 2.0i offers an impressive spec list that we’ve discussed above, but you can also add extra features with different variants in the range. Upgrading to the 2.0i-L adds features like autonomous emergency brakes and lead vehicle start alert to let you know when the vehicle ahead of you has started to move on. This variant also has a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, power-folding exterior mirrors, and dual-zone climate control.
The 2.0-i Premium adds sat-nav and a powered sunroof, while the top of the range 2.0i-S adds auto headlights and wipers, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, larger 18-inch alloys, and blind-spot monitoring.
Inside the Cabin
The new Subaru XV is roomier than the previous generation XV. The new cabin is trimmed and designed to a higher standard, with premium cloth seats in the 2.0i-L and 2.0i Premium and leather seats in the 2.0i-S. There is tilt and reach steering wheel adjustment to help you feel comfortable, and the XV has a taller suspension for an even better ride.
Safety
We’ve already touched on the EyeSight active safety features, but the XV has many more safety features. There is a reverse camera, seatbelt reminders, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. There is also a complement of seven airbags, including the driver, front passenger, side-impact, side curtain, and driver’s knee bags. These features have contributed to the Subaru XV being awarded the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.
