A First Drive Review of the Subaru Levorg

The Subaru Levorg 2016 is now available, and we have a review of the first time driving it. Here we will take a look at what the Subaru Levorg is and how it fits into the wider Subaru range. We will also give our first driving impressions and try to answer many of the questions that have cropped up.

What is the Subaru Levorg?

The Subaru Levorg 2016 is the latest version of the Levorg, but it is the first version to be available in the Australian market. It is the first new Subaru car to appear in Australia since the arrival of the BRZ three years ago. Essentially, the Levorg is a wagon that has a definite WRX vibe. Subaru denies that the Subaru Levorg for sale here is a full on WRX wagon, but if the company made such a car, it wouldn’t be all the different from the Levorg. Subaru has stated that they envisioned the Levorg as the natural successor to the 4th generation Liberty GT. As such, it fills the gap nicely between the WRX hatch and the larger discontinues Liberty GT Wagon.

What is it Like to Drive?

The Levorg is designed as a wagon with a sporty aesthetic and performance. It more than fulfills this brief, with a car that is built on a slightly extended, by 10 cm, version of the much loved WRX. It has a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder boxer powerplant that produces 197kW of power and 350Nm of torque within the 2,400 to 5,200 rpm range. Combined with the all wheel drive traction, this equates to an acceleration of 0-100km/hr in only 6.8 seconds. This is only slightly slower than the WRX which is impressive as the Levorg is carrying an additional 80 kg of weight in additional body work. The gearbox is a Sport Lineartronic CVT automatic unit which handles the gear changes effortlessly. This car is great fun to drive and about as close as you can imagine getting to the undiluted full on WRX driving experience in a wagon.

What is it Like as a Wagon?

Performance is all well and good, but the other half of the equation for the Levorg is that it should be a practical wagon. We are happy to report that the Levorg fulfills this role well with a cargo capacity of 522 litres that will easily handle most weekly needs and weekend trips away. The Levorg is available in two different models; the base level GT is priced at $42,990 plus on the road costs and the GT-S is $48,890. The Levorg GT-S also has a Spec B pack available that costs an additional $4,000 and adds features, such as a front splitter, side skirts, a rear diffuser, a rear spoiler vortex generator, 18” wheels, and STI branding.
